This summer the Law Society published guidance for in house legal counsel on how to apply its earlier guidance for the profession as a whole on the impact of climate change on our work.
That guidance, published in 2023 (and with an update in 2025 to extend the guidance to cover nature loss), set out solicitors’ core professional duties in the context of climate change.
Sitting alongside that guidance, the new version for in house counsel aims to help in the translation of those duties into practice, recognising the distinctive nature of that role.
David Hunter is Senior Counsel at Bates Wells and a member of the Law Society Climate Change Committee responsible for producing the guidance.
